History of the First Presbyterian Church

As members of the congregation of the oldest church in the City of Plattsburgh and the oldest
Presbyterian Church in Clinton County, we are proud to continue our strong tradition and our mission to:

1700's

November 10, 1792

First meeting of settlers to discuss
church organization

August 1795

Rev. Frederick Halsey, first pastor, began his service

October 1, 1797

FPC officially organized with 18 members.

1800's

June 1, 1812

Present site deeded by Abraham and Mary Brinckerhoff, frame church begun.

Sept 6 /11, 1812

British occupied the unfinished church as a cavalry barracks

September 11, 1814

FPC fired upon by Americans from east side of Saranac River

December 25, 1816

FPC finished and dedicated

April 2, 1817

Beekmantown PC formed by 54 members of First Presbyterian Church

February, 1826

First Presbyterian Sunday School organized

February 24, 1864

Peristrome PC formed by 55 members of First Presbyterian Church

December 14, 1865

Renovations completed, building re-dedicated

August 21, 1867

First Presbyterian Church destroyed by fire, along with 70 other buildings

July 17, 1868

Cornerstone of new church laid

July 21, 1870

Bell , made by Meneely of Troy, installed
in tower

July 8, 1873

Present building completed and dedicated

October 1, 1897

Church spire struck by lightning

Change from gas to electric, redecorated,
Estey pipe organ installed

Extensive renovations and improvements

Earliest verified Christmas Tea and Bazaar

Formation of the Women’s Association from
three older societies

Extensive renovations and installation of electric heat

Dedicated new educational wing begun in 1966

175th anniversary celebration

Wilhelm tracker organ installed

FPC put on the National and State Historic Registers

Capital Improvement Program to install ramp and elevator, repair stonework

FPC used for housing refugees awaiting immigration hearings in Canada

Elevator dedicated

Women’s Association changed its name to
Presbyterian Women

February 1991

Rev. Paul A. Heller installed as 22nd pastor

200th anniversary celebration

Signed partnership with Synod of

FPC joined Greater Plattsburgh Interfaith Hospitality Network

Living Stones Building Fund campaign for repairs and renovations
